The countdown for the long-awaited cabinet reshuffle began today as Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Shibhu Soren — who gave up his ministerial berth at the Centre for Jharkhand chief ministership — met Congress president Sonia Gandhi at her residence.
Soren, who refused to speak to reporters waiting outside 10 Janpath, could not be reached at his residence either. He is believed to be insistent that the coal portfolio, which he held earlier, be restored to him.
Sources said though October 5 has been mentioned as a probable date, the reshuffle may be delayed for being too close to the Congress CMs’ conclave, slated for October 7 and 8. PM Manmohan Singh gave a non-committal response on the issue today on the sidelines of a function at Rashtrapati Bhawan. ‘‘Wait and watch. You will know when it happens.’’
Power Minister P.M. Sayeed, Information and Broadcasting Minister Jaipal Reddy, Small-scale Industries Minister Mahavir Prasad and Minister of State for Tourism Renuka Choudhury are in the danger of being dropped.
