With an aim to bring the Morni farmers on a par with the farmers in the plains, the Haryana Horticulture department has decided to introduce the polyhouse farming in the area.

This is for the first time that special emphasis is being laid on the region as the Haryana horticulture department aims to increase the all-time low percentage (10 per cent ) crop production in the winters at Morni.

“With harsh climatic conditions at Morni, competing with the farmers in the plains is impossible for those in Morni. So the only solution is to cultivate during the off season, which would also fetch them a good price for their produce.

Keeping this point in mind, it has been decided to promote the cultivation using polyhouses in Morni. As this is for the first time that the project of polyhouses is being taken up, the department plans to set up at least five demo polyhouses at Morni in October,” said Arjun Singh Saini, Deputy Director of the Haryana Horticulture department.

He also added that it would be after this that all the progressive farmers in the area who are interested in going ahead with this form of cultivation, will be provided around 50 per cent subsidy to set up more polyhouses in their fields.

“Besides this, to have adequate water for cultivation, the Horticulture department will be financing the construction of small water tanks along with the polyhouses. All this would be part of the first phase of the project. In the second phase, we will emphasis on encouraging the post-harvest management like sorting, grading and transporting,” added Saini.

He added that in the first phase, the department aims to cover around 10,000 square metres in Morni, which would then be gradually increased. At present, the farmer identification is going on after which training would be imparted to them in this regard, sources in the department said.
