Chennai, Aug 20: Sonic Multani wanted to finish off the match in style, and with a century break to boot. But providence would not have it. The National snooker champion, playing a sequence of reds and black, in a sudden change of mind, shifted the combination and started potting the pink. On 89, the pink was in a favourable position to be sunk.Ninty-nine times out of hundred, even sleep-walking, Sonic would have potted it. Today, he missed it.Sonic jerked a little and the ball wobbled a little at the jaw and just stayed there. Disappointed, he clutched his head, indicating as if he has gone off his head. It was a frustrating finish to an anti-climatic final in the All India MCC Invitation Snooker Tournament on Wednesday. Sonic won 6-2 against Alok Kumar to become the champion.``I was too much in double mind during the break,'' said Sonic, explaining the miss. The match, otherwise, as a contest was a big yawn. Alok Kumar, the two-time former National champion, who shifted his priorities to billiards after fruitless labour in the glamour game, which does not have big money for the picking, has the reputation of a comeback man. The gritty Punjabi had done it several times. But today he looked like a pygmy before Sonic. The only time Alok was there in the match was in the second frame where he knocked in a 85 break. Sonic, except the third where he made a 73, did not make big breaks. At the recess, he was leading 4-1 and appeared to finish off his rival quickly. Alok fought back to take the sixth frame and though he was trailing 35-60 in the seventh, looked in a position to pull it off, but failed when he accidentally potted the black.RESULT: Sonic Multani (Guj) bt Alok Kumar (Pun) 6-2 (78-22, 0-91, 80-4, 74-21, 84-13, 32-78, 67-35, 89-6)
