SURAT, Dec 27:Bharatiya Janata party leader Atal Behari Vajpayee today termed reports of Sonia Gandhi’s alleged inclination towards BJP as being a "fabricated story of certain political elements to take advantage of the fluid political situation".

The rumours were floated as the Congress leaders, who were in search of a dynamic leadership, had misinterpreted Gandhi’s silence on the political scene, he said.

Vajpayee, who was here to launch BJP’s election campaign in south Gujarat, told newspersons that the "pseudo-secularism of Congress and United Front in trying to isolate the BJP had failed as most of the Congress and regional party cadres are joining the BJP".

The senior BJP leader said he had no meeting with the Prime Minister I K Gujral on Gujarat situation and he would lead delegation to the President and Prime Minister demanding imposition of President’s rule in the state.

Earlier Vajpayee called upon people in Rajkot while launching the election campaign in the region to vote for "an honest and people-oriented party".

He said, if voted to power, BJP would work for political stability, security, eradication of corruption, politics of ethics on a priority basis.

Vajpayee said he was shocked to hear about the dissolution of Gujarat Assembly and the Governor’s decision to ask the "minority government to remain as the caretaker". Vajpayee said when he left Delhi he was unaware of the fact that he would have to campaign for both parliamentary and Assembly elections in Gujarat.

Holding the Congress and United Front governments responsible for creating instability and uncertainty, he lambasted the Congress hunger for power at any cost.

Referring to the party split in Gujarat during BJP rule, Vajpayee described them as a "tragedy" and assured the people that it would not be repeated in future.

He also described the "failures" of United Front and the "misdeeds" of the Congress, "which had pushed the country into a state of chaos and anarchy".
