Congress president Sonia Gandhi today urged the people of Uttar Pradesh to teach a lesson to small political outfits in the Lok Sabha elections and support the Congress to prevent the BJP from returning to power. Addressing an election rally in Sitapur, Sonia said the elections had provided a golden opportunity to the electorate to inflict a crushing defeat on the BJP. Taking a dig at small political parties in the state, she said these were only serving their vested interests. Addressing another rally in Aligarh, Sonia hit out at the BJP, saying it was tearing the country’s social fabric apart and dividing the society on the basis of caste and religion. She said the BJP was laying claims to achievements for which foundations had been laid by the Congress. The Congress president also talked about the problems being faced by the weavers, farmers and youths and said that the NDA only made false promises during its five-year regime at the Centre. Appealing to the people to vote for her party to ensure all-round development in the country, Sonia said development took a backseat after non-Congress governments came to power in the state and at the Centre.
