New Delhi, August 13: For Soni Kali Raman, the daughter of Master Chandgi Ram, a lot was at stake: Her credibility as a wrestler and her father’s pride. She came out winners on both count. Fighting fiercely like a tigress, Soni pounced on her Chinese Taipei rival Linchalin and brought her down to the mat to win the only gold medal in the women’s section of the Asian Junior Wrestling Championship on the concluding day, here at the IGI Indoor Stadium on Sunday.
Soni was in no mood to take the bout to the last seconds. And in under two minutes, she had made her rival bite the dust. Initially, her Taipei opponent was very aggressive and warded off Soni gallantly. But proving her superiority, Soni employed such grips to log some quick points.
Among the men, it was Ravinder Patel and Mukesh Khatri made the last day’s event memorable, both for themselves and for India, by bagging the gold in the 63 and 54kg events of Greco-Roman. For both, Ravinder from Pune and Mukesh, employed with CISF, their bouts turned a one-sided affair. Both won by technical fall. Ravinder, using aggressive methods, lifted his Japanese rival Watan Be Yasno and tossed him on the floor, much to the delight of his supporters. Keeping the clock busy, he kept on logging point after point before clinching it by technical fall.
The meet has proved to be a rewarding one for India as, at the end of it, the hosts picked nine gold, seven silver and six gold medals. The icing on the cake came when India were declared the overall champions in the Greco-Roman category. In freestyle, India had finished second behind Iran.
