Somali pirates who seized a Ukrainian freighter carrying arms were surrounded by several foreign warships off Haradere, in central Somalia, a ranking Somali official and witnesses said.

“We are getting information that three warships are tracking the pirates and two of them are very close to the hijacked ship,” the adviser to the presidency of the semi-autonomous region of Puntland, Bile Mohamoud Qabowsade, told AFP in Mogadishu by telephone.

“One of these ships is from the United States and the two other ones are from the European Union countries,” he added.

A tribal chief and fishermen in the Haradere zone reached by AFP confirmed that they had seen the Ukrainian ship surrounded by at least two ships.

The MV Faina was seized on Thursday with a crew of 21 people on board as it neared the Kenyan port of Mombasa with a cargo of 33 T-72 battle tanks, grenade launchers and ammunition for the Kenyan army.
