Five persons were killed and 55 injured in rioting, arson and subsequent police firing here on Friday after a bandh called by the All-India Muslim Vikas Parishad (AIMVP) turned violent.
The bandh called to protest the recent remarks by a Christian religious leader in the US against prophet Mohammed turned violent. An indefinite curfew has been declared in the textile town.
Three were killed in police firing, while two persons were stabbed to death, police said, while unconfirmed reports suggested that four of deaths were caused by the firing.
Over 20 shops, business establishments and vehicles were set ablaze. The mob also targeted Navratra pandals. More than 15 persons have been taken into custody. Curfew has been imposed in two police station areas.
