The Supreme Court on Wednesday fixed July 23 for final hearing into the killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh in a fake encounter. The directive came from a Bench comprising Justices Tarun Chaterjee and Aftab Alam after it adjourned the matter for a week.
On April 28 this year, the apex court had dismissed bail applications of two senior IPS officials — M N Dinesh and N K Amin — who were allegedly involved in the killing of Sheikh and later his wife Kausarbi. Dinesh, a Rajasthan cadre officer, and Amin, an officer of the rank of a deputy superintendent of police in the Gujarat Police, had challenged the cancellation of their bail by the Gujarat High Court.
Though a trial court had granted bail to the two officers, the high court had cancelled the same. The officials, in their plea in the apex court, claimed that the high court had considered irrelevant material while cancelling their bails.
Refuting their plea, the Supreme Court concurred with the findings of the high court and held that it had considered relevant material for the purpose. Dinesh had allegedly assisted the Gujarat Police in the encounter while Amin has been accused of disposing of the body of Kauserbi, two days after she was killed.
What came as a belated admission on the part of the Gujarat Government was that they and the Rajasthan Police killed Sohrabuddin in a joint operation in 2005. But after Rubabuddin, Sohrabuddin’s brother, moved the court, Gujarat finally admitted that Sohrabuddin had been killed in a fake encounter.
The state Government also made a delayed revelation on the disappearance of Kausarbi. During a hearing on April 30, it confirmed that she was also killed and her body burnt.
