Graeme Smith plundered 154 not out to lead South Africa to a five-wicket victory over England that clinched the Test series at Edgbaston on Saturday. The visitors, set 281 to win the third Test and with it the four-match series after they went 1-0 up at Headingley, reached 283 for five in fading light on Day Four after the pendulum had swung both ways.

AB de Villiers added 78 with Smith and then Mark Boucher hit 45 in a crucial sixth wicket stand of 112 with his skipper after South Africa slumped from 65 for no loss to 93 for four. This is Proteas’ first series win in England since 1965.

Brief scores: England: 231 and 314(P Collingwood 135, K Pietersen 94; M Morkel 4/97) lost to South Africa: 363 and 283 for 5 (G Smith 154 no, M Bou-cher 45 no; A Flintoff 2/72, M Panesar 2/91) by five wickets.
