MUMBAI, January 16: Union Bank’s failure to keep pace with the over-rate cost them dear at the Parsee Gymkhana today. Despite bowling out Varun Shipping 25 runs short of the victory target of 172, they ended up on the losing side as they had bowled four overs short. In the event, they were penalised 28 runs resulting in Varun Shipping escaping with the B Division Times Shield honours.

Resuming the day at 46 for 3, Varun were in all sorts of trouble chasing the 172-run target. UBI medium-pacer Manish Sakhalkar ensured that the Varun batsmen were in a spot of bother with his impressive spell of 13 overs claiming five wickets for 47 runs.

Only opener Vincent Albuquerque (32) and Ashok Upadhyaya were the only batsmen to withstand Sakhalkar’s fury.

Even as the jubilant bankmen returned after bowling out Varun for 147, a dramatic scenario unfolded once umpires F N Karkaria and K Jayantilal sat down to calculate the over-rate. They discovered that UBI had bowled four over short resulting in a penalty which is calculated at twice the run-rate per over (3.5 in this case).

Though the bankmen won the contest on the field their neglect of the over-rate saw the title change hands within minutes, much to their despair.

Varun, thus capped a dream run which began four years ago with the D division crown. With their triumph today, they have gained a berth in the prestigious A Division, next season.

Brief Scores: Union Bank 274 & 205 lost to Varun Shipping 308 & 175 (including 28 penalty runs) (Vincent Albuquerque 32, Ashok Upadhyaya 53; Manish Sakhalkar 6-62).
