UP against allegations of brutality by his own men in the Uday Bhangde death case, Commissioner of Police D.N. Jadhav today handed over the inquiry to the state CID.

At least six personnel of Aundh police chowki — where Uday was detained and allegedly beaten early on Monday for stealing petrol from a car — have been booked for offence of murder. They included three constables, a havildar and two commandos.

The police did not divulge names of the personnel who had been booked — the reason: The suspects are being questioned. ‘‘The law will take its course,’’ JCP S.M. Sayeed said.

Sayeed sought to assure that the suspected policemen, if found guilty, will not be protected in any way as their responsibility as policemen was more compared to common people. That, however, depends on the outcome of the CID investigation.

Late on Monday night, a mob of over 500 people — including residents of Kasturba vasti in Aundh — laid siege to the road in front of Chatuhshrungi police station, demanding action against ‘‘errant’’ policemen who ‘‘beat up’’ Uday.
