The ongoing probe into the Telgi scam acquired a fresh twist when Tabrez Telgi, nephew of main accused Abdul Karim Telgi, recorded a confessional statement before the Special Investigation Team probing the scandal.
‘‘The statement (by Tabrez) has been recorded under Section 18 of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) before the police and will be confirmed by the Chief Judicial Magistrate as also the Special Judge (MCOCA),’’ a senior SIT officer told The Indian Express here this evening.
He, however, refused to elaborate the averments recorded by Tabrez. ‘‘It is a matter of ongoing probe,’’ he said, adding that Tabrez would be presented before the Special Judge (MCOCA) S.M. Shembole on January 20.
A proclaimed offender, Tabrez was arrested here on January 3. He is widely regarded as the brain behind Telgi’s entire operations regarding printing, packaging and marketing of fake stamps and stamp papers in Maharashtra and elsewhere. According to SIT sources, Tabrez was responsible for the collection and disbursement of all money generated by the business.
Tabrez is alleged to have accounts in three multinational banks from where he had been withdrawing lakhs of money. Late on Saturday evening, the SIT produced him in a city court after his custodial remand was over. The court extended his judicial custody till January 20.
