Family ties triumphed over love as the parents of two Haryana-based sisters, who had fled home almost a month ago to meet and marry Indian pace bowler Irfan Pathan, took them back yesterday.

Lakshmi Valmiki (18) and her sister Seema (15) were taken back to Yamunanagar in Haryana last evening after they failed to meet the golden boy of Indian cricket, family sources said. Their father, Surajkumar Valmiki, said: ‘‘It was their childishness which led them to do such a thing.’’

Valmiki said he had withdrawn Rs 4,000 from his bank and kept it in a cupboard in June. He added that his daughters fled with this money to Vadodara, the hometown of the left-arm seamer, without informing anybody. He said initially both the girls were reluctant to return home but conceded to parental demands after Irfan advised them to concentrate on their studies, during an interview with a private TV channel telecast yesterday.

Both the girls had faked their identities as they did not want their parents to trace them and also did not want authorities of Women’s Welfare Home to send them home. Since June 30, the two were at this home in the hope that they would meet Irfan.
