PUNE, May 11: In a freak accident, 23-year-old Ajay Sundaram of Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies (SIMS) fell to his death from the third floor of the institute, this afternoon.

According to friends and eye-witnesses, Ajay, who had just finished his class on the fourth floor came out to relax. He went down to the third floor and sat on the yellow railing when somebody from the fourth floor called out to him.

Reaching out to see who it was Ajay lost his balance and fell. According to the other students, most heard a scream before they realised that somebody had fallen down.

Some of the residents, living opposite the building from where Ajay fell, said they saw him bending backwards to talk to someone on the fourth floor. “He lost his balance and fell down. Most of us heard the scream,” said one of the resident who lives on the third floor.

Ajay was rushed to the Ratna Memorial Hospital on Senapati Bapat Road. However, a profusely bleeding Ajay was declared dead on arrival by the hospital authorities.

A student of the PGDMM (FT), Ajay was in the second semester and Tuesday was his last day before he moved on to the third semester. His father, Col M M Sundaram, posted in Rai Bareilly, was informed over the telephone by the director of the institute, Prof Ranjeet Mudholkar. He is expected to reach here tomorrow morning.

Ajay had passed his bachelor’s degree in engineering (BE) from Gujarat, before he enrolled at SIMS for the PGDMM course. Described as a good student, Ajay’s records show that he stood first class right from SSC to his BE. A keen football player, he had represented his school in various inter-school tournaments and was also a good swimmer. His friends said Ajay was an enthusiastic and extrovert person.

The gates of the college were closed and outsiders were barred from entering till the police from the Deccan police station arrived. A complaint has been lodged with the Deccan police station.

Ajay’s body was sent to the Sassoon hospital for a post-mortem late in the evening.
