MUMBAI, DEC 5: Experience gained precedence over youth when the National cricket team for the Akai-Singer Champions Trophy overs-limited tournament to be staged in Sharjah was announced here today evening.

Seasoned campaigners Javagal Srinath, Venkatesh Prasad, Anil Kumble and Navjot Singh Sidhu make a comeback replacing Nilesh Kulkarni, Harvinder Singh, Debashish Mohanty and Hrishikesh Kanitkar from the one-day squad that last played in the Sahara Cup and a three-match series against Pakistan.

“It is an old wine in a new bottle,” was how Ramakant Desai, chairman of the selection committee, described the composition of the team. While Sidhu forced his way into the team with superb batting and fielding display during the ongoing Test series, Prasad and Kumble make a return after being rested for the twin-series against Pakistan.

Another significant decision taken by the selectors was that the Indian captain Sachin Tendulkar will not open the innings but bat lower in the order. The explanation given by Desai was: “The entire burden used to fall on the team whenever he (Tendulkar) got out early and so we (selectors) decided that he should bat lower at number four. We expect more runs from him which he can do in the last 30 overs. “Saurav (Ganguly) and Sidhu would open the innings,” he added.

The other names discussed during the 85-minute deliberation were: Nayan Mongia, Maharashtra’s Hrishikesh Kanitkar, Hyderabad’s V V S Laxman and Noel David, Orissa’s Debasish Mohanty and Sanjay Raul, Mumbai’s Sairaj Bahutule and Punjab off-spinner Harbhajan Singh.

National selectors Ramakant Desai, M P Pandove, Kishen Rungta, Sambaran Banerjee and Shivlal Yadav met after the third day’s play of the ongoing Test match here to decide on the 14-member side.

The team for the three-match series against Sri Lanka will be named on December 18 at Mumbai, informed Jayant Lele, convener of the selection committee and secretary, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The team departs for Sharjah from Mumbai on December 9.
