CHANDIGARH, April 19: In a written complaint submitted to UT Inspector General of Police R P Singh, Dayawanti, 53, a resident of Mori Gate in Manimajra has accused a local Sub-Inspector of actively conniving with her tenant and forcing her into an agreement to sell her property at less than one-third of the market price. Based on the complaint, the IGP has ordered a probe into the SI's alleged involvement. The woman has alleged that the police registered "a false case" against her for theft and trespass. She has added that following the registration of a case her nephew, Hansraj, who lives in the neighbouring house, was picked up by the police and kept in police remand amidst threats that he would be tortured if Dayawanti did not enter into an agreement with her tenant to sell her shop.In her complaint, the woman states: "Hans Raj was not named in the FIR but he was arrested in connivance with Manimajra Sub-Inspector S.S. Rana to exert pressure on me to part with my shop.""The case was registered on March 10. Everything was fine for 10 days or so. Then on the afternoon of March 23, Rana came to the shop and made inquiries. My sons were not there. Hans Raj, who sells vegetables in the next shop, was taken to the police station. In the evening we learnt that he had been arrested," Dayawanti told Newsline. "They got police remand for him for two days and we got scared. Then Rana made a deal. He said that if I sold my shop, he would not torture Hans Raj. All my relatives began forcing me into agreeing to the policeman's condition," she added. The complaint adds that Rana and her tenant told Dayawanti, that "if she entered into a compromise, Hans Raj would be released forthwith and all cases against her would be dropped and if not, she and her two sons would have no respite."The woman told the IGP in her complaint that she was made to put her thumb mark on some papers, which she was told was an agreement to sell her shop for Rs 1.8 lakh. She has also claimed that the shop costs over Rs 6 lakh and alleged that she was "forced, intimated and illegally compelled" to sell the shop against her wishes. However, Sub-Inspector Rana, when contacted said: "I have no knowledge of the agreement. I was only investigating." He confirmed that Hans Raj was arrested and kept in police custody, while admitting that no recoveries were made from him.Meanwhile, IGP R P Singh said: "I have assigned the task of holding an inquiry to a senior official and asked him to submit the report at the earliest. If the man is found guilty, he will be punished."
