The organisers of the badminton competition of the Asian Games, who were foxed by the absence of Pullela Gopichand, heaved a big sigh of relief when they learnt that the former All England champion was finally arriving tomorrow.

Gopi, who got the Union Government clerance earlier in the day, was scheduled to leave for Busan on Saturday night, via Delhi. He will be joined by Abhinn Shyam Gupta, a replacement for Aparna Popat, who pulled out of the Games earlier.

Competition director Cho Won Kyu, who was surprised by the delay in the clearance of ‘‘one of the finest players in the world’’ said Gopi is slated to clash with Francisco Yana of East Timor in the opening men’s singles on October 10. Abhinn is scheduled to play Hendrawan in the opening match.

The government took its time in clearing Gopi and Abhinn because of the confusion over their world rankings. But Badminton Association of India president V K Verma, who met secretary Lalit Mohan Mehta, appraised him of the position. During their meeting on October 3, Verma had explained to Mehta about Gopi’s good run this year. Gopi had upset title favourite Hendrawan and Lin Dan at the Japan Open.
