Mumbai, Nov 2: Shruti Dhawan, the 16-year-old former DHAITA trainee, got her name on the WTA computer, after she upset third-seed Montika Anuchan of Thailand 6-2, 6-4 to enter the quarter-finals of the Central Bank-ITF Women’s Circuit (Masters) tennis tournament at the DTA courts here today. The Delhi girl had lost to the Thai in third leg of the tournament in the quarter-finals.

She thus made up for that and earned 1.5 points to get a ranking against her name. She meets another Delhi girl Shalini Thakur in the last eight. The other three seeds, however, made smooth progress into the second round.

Dhawan produced powerful ground-strokes and made suitable amends for her shoddy serve in the second set to win in straight sets.

Top-seed Sai Jayalakshmi, winner of two of the three satellite legs, brushed past Ahmedabad-based Nikita Bharadwaj 6-0, 6-1 while second seed Rushmi Chakravarthi faced some resistance in the second set before downing Pooja Deshmukh 6-0, 7-5.

Orawan Wongkamalasai, ensured Thaipresence in the tournament when she dismissed Karishma Patel dropping just two games. She now meets 16-year-old Russian Anna Nefedova who lost one game in the first game against Priyanka Contractor in an otherwise lop-sided match.

In the most exciting match of the day, Dhawan wrapped up the first set 6-2 and then raced to 4-2 as Montika double-faulted on break point.
