Giant-killer Shruthi Kurian of Andhra Pradesh upset her statemate and top seed Jwala Gutta 1-11, 11-4, 11-3 to win the women’s singles title in the Rs 2-lakh all India senior badminton championship for the Mayor’s Trophy at the P J Hindu Gymkhana here today.
In the men’s singles final between two unseeded local boys, Amar Mohite got the better of Himanshu Thakkar 17-14, 15-8.
Shruthi, who had shocked second seed D Shweta of Andhra Pradesh in the semi-finals yesterday, was yet again a picture of confidence. She looked much fitter and faster than her much reputed rival. But it was Jwala Gutta who was in fine fettle in the first game which she wrapped-up conceding just one point.
The match which lasted 32 minutes witnessed a dramatic turn-around with Shruthi tightening her serves and rallies. She took an early 7-2 lead and never looked back winning the second game 11-4. In the decider, too, it was Shruthi all the way after she took an early 8-2 lead to win the match at 11-3.
In the men’s final, Mohite came from behind in both the games. He was trailing 7-11 and 11-14 before he played some breathtaking forehand smashes to win the first game at 17-14. In the second, too, he was trailing 2-7 before he pulled up his socks to win at 15-8 in 43 minutes.
