Like his uncle, Sena chief Bal Thackeray, Raj Thackeray is known for his fiery speeches. ‘‘From where did they muster the courage to combat local youths? Let them do it here and see what happens,’’ he warns, while reacting to an Express report that north Indians are planning a counter demonstration. ‘‘Do not awaken the Assam in us,’’ he adds. Raj spoke to Shailesh Gaikwad:
Do you approve of violence as a means of proving a point?
Compare what happened in Kalyan with what happened in Assam. Did the boys attack anyone with swords here? At the railway premises in Mumbai Central, they reacted only after a security officer abused Maharashtrians during a peaceful demonstration.
But this campaign has created tension. Groups of north Indians are now planning to counter the violence.
Let them do so and see what happens. We should not be held responsible for the consequences. Do not awaken the Assam in us.
If they have so much courage, why don’t they go and ask the leaders of UP and Bihar why their states are underdeveloped? Show your lathis to Laloo Prasad Yadav, who fails to generate employment in his own state but gives lectures on what we should do.
Every Indian has the right to apply for vacancies at the national level. Why are you objecting?
Why does the Centre want to hold competitive exams for unskilled jobs? Why don’t they just recruit from among the millions of unemployed people registered with the employment exchange.
Mumbai is a metropolis. Outsiders also played a role in building it. How can you oppose north Indians like this?
Let me make this clear. We are not opposed to north Indians—including Biharis—settled here before 1995. We just do not want the influx to continue.
