Lankans hope to turn tables on India
Arjuna Ranatune, international cricket’s seniormost citizen, has reasons to flash his trademark dimples. In less than 48 hours, his personal fortunes have soared like the sales graph of Microsoft. On Saturday, his team scored an important — and rare — victory against Pakistan which enabled them stay alive in the Pepsi Tri-series. And a day later, providence helped his career avoid potential political minefields when his brother Dhammika’s faction trounced Clifford Ratwatte — a close kin of the Bandaranaikes — in an acrimonious presidential election of the Sri Lankan Cricket Board.

Azhar’s injury
Even the fittest find survival difficult. That Mohammed Azharuddin, arguably the fittest member in the Indian squad, has broken down with a shoulder injury underlines the growing concern. The good news is that Azhar should be back on the field soon, hopefully for the final of the Pepsi triangular — if India get that far. The bad news is that we may not see him dazzle the world with his spectacular fielding for some time. The injury is bound to weigh heavily on his mind.

Bengal in semis
Bengal showed their class to knock out Manipur’s young brigade in the last quarterfinal league match of the Santosh Trophy at HADP Breeks Stadium in Udhagamandalam on Monday. The reigning champions’ 4-1 win was studded with Jo Paul Ancheri’s breath-taking goal.

UT boxer loses
S Suresh Singh of Central Reserve Police Force (CISF) stormed into the final of the light flyweight category with an upset win over National Games gold medallist H Srinivasa Rao in the semifinals of the 45th Senior Boxing Championships in Vishapatnam. Suresh, who beat the local lad and favourite Srinivas Rao well within the distance, will lock mitts with Mohd Ali Qamar of West Bengal for the title. Qamar outboxed Ramesh Singh of Chandigarh.
