Officers of Mumbai’s Crime Branch in a joint operation with Gujarat police have nabbed two shooters, allegedly belonging to the underworld. Sources say the arrests could be linked to the murder of rebel BJP leader Haren Pandya in Ahmedabad on Wednesday.
The two have been identified as Farooq Dadiwala and Shagir Sheikh and sources say they belong to the Dawood Ibrahim gang. Meanwhile, a team of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was expected to arrive in Ahmedabad on Thursday night.
Sources said the four witnesses are the Law Garden watchman, a snack-stall vendor, an employee at an ice-cream parlor near the scene of crime and a sweeper.
The accounts of the eyewitnesses matched on two fronts — the killer’s description and the direction he took after the killing.According to them, the killer was a tall, slim youth aged between 25 and 30.
Dressed in an ash-coloured trouser and green shirt, he reportedly walked away to Panchwati cross-roads after the shooting.
The snack-stall vendor said he did not notice the man after that but the man manning the ice-cream parlour and the sweeper told the police that the man fled on a two-wheeler waiting by the roadside ahead. The watchman failed to see the killer escape as he ran into Law Garden on hearing the gunshots.
Police Commissioner K R Kaushik admitted that the hands which pumped the bullets into Pandya seemed ‘‘to be those of a professional.’’
