BANGALORE, MAY 18: Shivashankar Kanbargimath caused a major upset when he defeated eighth seed and Davis Cup reserve Vijay Kannan in straight sets 6-3, 7-5 on the second day of the Wearhouse-Century Club men’s ITF Satellite tennis tournament at the Century Club courts here on Tuesday.

Vinod Sridhar was stretched by Kamala Kannan before he prevailed at 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Shivashankar, a qualifier here, was at his best. Taking advantage of an error-prone Vijay Kannan’s game, Shivashankar breezed into a 4-0 lead after achieving breaks in the second and fourth games. However, Vijay came back into the game winning the next three games on the trot. A grim battle was waged in the eight game before Vijay conceded his serve. That proved to be a crucial loss as Shivashankar, serving for the set had no problems in clinching the game and set at 6-3.

Shivashankar playing aggressively, continued in the same vein in the second set too. Shivashankar had his opponent under a great deal of pressure as he began with a break in the very first game and soon led 3-0. Vijay was not the one who would throw in his towel early. He capitalised on Shivashankar’s erring serve and won the next three games to draw level.

From there on, the match was fiercely fought as both held serves till the tenth game. Shivashankar, despite the break from the game, showed good agility and came up with some fine forehand strokes. Vijay on the other hand showed his strength with fine passing shots.

Shivashankar achieved the crucial break he was looking for in the eleventh game and held his serve in the 12th game to cruise through to the second round.
