BJP leader Jagadish Shettar is all set to become the Speaker of the newly-constituted state Assembly.

BJP leader Jagadish Shettar is all set to become the Speaker of the newly-constituted state Assembly. Shettar is apparently the lone contestant for the post and his election is expected to be formally declared on Thursday. Accompanied by Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, Shettar filed his nomination for the post on Wednesday.

With numbers not in its favour, the Congress chose not to field a candidate nor was there any understanding with JDS to have a common nominee.

Also on Wednesday, a three-day session of the newly-constituted Karnataka Assembly began with Pro-tem Speaker K G Bopaiah administering the oath of office to the members. Yeddyurappa was the first to take the oath.

Meanwhile, BJP MP from Bellary G Karunakara Reddy, who was inducted into the newly-formed Government last week, has resigned from the Lok Sabha. His resignation has been accepted by Speaker Somnath Chatterjee with effect from Tuesday. Reddy was elected a BJP MLA in the just concluded Karnataka polls.
