Taking a serious view of the indiscipline by the Sher-e-Jalandhar players, the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) has decided to deduct 50 per cent of the prize money that the team had bagged by finishing runners-up in the mega event. Announcing the federation’s decision here today, IHF secretary general K Jothikumaran said the unsavoury incident left a bad taste among the hockey fraternity.

Issuing a press note, Jothikumaran also strongly condemned the rash behaviour of the players who had physically abused umpire Satinder Sharma. Satinder went on to walk out of the match and the remaining portion of the match was conducted by reserve umpire Suresh Kumar. The game had to remain suspended for more than 20 minutes.

“This sort of behaviour can never be encouraged, and therefore we have decided to take punitive measures so that similar incidents are not repeated. It has been decided by the IHF and the organising committee that 50 per cent of the total prize payable to them will be deducted. The deducted, amount, though, would be added up to the total prize money to be given in the next edition of the tournament,” the press note added.

Jothikumaran further said action against particular players involved in the incident will also be taken as per the report submitted by the tournament director (TD). “The players will not be let allowed to get away with it. We’ve told the TD to send his report at the earliest so that action against erring players be taken. IHF cannot take an action on its own since it is the prerogative of TD,” he added.

The IHF secretary also added that the federation president KPS Gill too had taken a note of the incident. “Our chief has expressed strong views about the entire episode, which have been conveyed to the management of Sher-e-Jalandhar as well. We’re also watching the off-field attitude of the players. I can assure you that all teams have been apprised of the developments, so that a strong signal is sent across the country,” he remarked.
