The Centre has asked all ports and scrap dealers in Gujarat to declare any war munition on their premises within 15 days. The order came after the recovery of a large number of explosives from across the country.

“This is a national problem now. The Centre has given a 15-day declaration date to all concerned parties — ports and scrap dealers — to declare if any more explosives were in their premises”, a senior police official said on Sunday.

“Police has also been told to thoroughly investigate and inspect existing consignments of scrap at all ports and yards,” he said.

Two labourers were killed and three injured while handling scrap in a factory in Bhavnagar district here on October 20, which later led to the recovery of 42 shells on October 22. As many as 23 shells were recovered from a factory in Sihor on Saturday.

“The shells recovered from Bhavnagar in the past two days had come from Pipavav Port in Amreli. We are investigating similar instances,” the official said. —PTI
