Maintaining that state-owned organisation cannot remain insulated from changes taking place in private industry, Defence Minister A K Antony has asked the Defence Research and Development Organisation (or DRDO) scientists to “shed old mindsets” to face new challenges in a globalised world.

While addressing scientists after a tour of several DRDO laboratories in Hyderabad on Tuesday, Antony said that the organisation needs to increase its interaction with public and private sectors in accordance with the Government policy, to give the private industry a bigger role in the defence production sector.

“Rapid advances in science and technology require that the DRDO adjusts its organisational structure and goals to new situations and new requirements. And in the process, it should shed old mindsets. The DRDO will have to actively increase its interaction with both public and private sectors for technology transfers and Research & Development so that products which have civilian applications can be productionised actively,” the Minister said.

Antony, who was accompanied by DRDO chief M Natarajan, visited the Missile Complex and its laboratories including the Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL) and Defence Electronics Research Laboratory.
