NEW DELHI, Oct 29: The Delhi police today said several incriminating documents and computer floppies were seized during a search at the office and residence of V Balasubramanian, an alleged associate of Romesh Sharma.

The search followed investigations in the cases against Sharma, an alleged Dawood Ibrahim frontman. Balasubramanian is an official with the Reliance Industries.

Joint Commissioner of Police (southern range) Amod Kanth today said, “The seized documents show that Sharma and Balasubramanian maintained close links at a personal level.” He, however, clarified: “But there is no evidence of a direct connection between Sharma and Reliance Industries.”

In a statement, Reliance Industries said: “Neither Reliance, nor anyone on behalf of Reliance, had any dealings with Romesh Sharma. Dealings, if any, with Romesh Sharma were in his personal capacity and have nothing whatsoever to do with Reliance.”

Kanth said that the number of cases registered against Sharma went up to 14 today, after aMalviya Nagar resident complained that she had also been cheated by Sharma.

The police had obtained a search warrant from the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Jai Prakash Narain yesterday. They reached Balasubramanian’s A-96, New Friends Colony residence around 8 p.m. and left at 12.30 p.m.

The search was however started only after Balasubramanian arrived at his residence around 10.45 p.m. with advocate Madhukar Goel.

Kanth said that the seized documents included papers relating to a helicopter that had been found parked at Sharma’s Chattarpur farmhouse on October 20. Sharma was arrested that day and is currently in judicial custody.

Sharma is alleged to have acquired the helicopter after cheating a Mubai-based aviation company. The police said he had detained, Suresh Rao, a director of the company, when Rao asked him to return the helicopter.

Kanth, however, did not elaborate on the contents of the other documents. “Some of these are government documents. These along with the floppy discs havebeen over to Income-Tax department.”

The Crime Branch is investigating two cases, while the south district police are probing the rest.

Kanth also said that a coordination committee comprising the Central Bureau of Investigation, Income-Tax department, Delhi Police and Enforcement Directorate would monitor the probe in the Romesh Sharma cases.

Sharma was yesterday judicial custody till November 11 in connection with the cases registered against him.

The Delhi Police have so far recovered properties allegedly worth over Rs 500 crore. These includes: 15 foreign cars, documents pertaining to over a dozen houses in Delhi, Mumbai and Jalandhar, jewellery and a large quantity of foreign made liquor, one tiger skin, one leopard skin, a deer skin and 14 rounds of .32 bore revolvers from Sharma.
