Russian sixth seed Anna Chakvetadze advanced to the fourth round of the US Open today by defeating India’s 26th-seeded Sania Mirza 6-2, 6-3 in 53 minutes.
Chakvetadze will next play the winner of a later match between Swiss 11th seed Patty Schnyder and Austria’s Tamira Paszek.
In men’s doubles, Mahesh Bhupathi and his Serbian partner Nenad Zimonjic crashed out in the second round to the American duo of Robert Kendrick and Sam Querrey in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 4-6.
On Friday, Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupathi shocked seventh seeds Elena Likhovtseva and Daniel Nestor in straight sets to advance to the second round. The Indian pair beat the Canadian-Russian duo 6-0, 6-2.
Bhupathi and Sania will now take on the French-American pair of Tatiana Golovin and Bob Bryan in the second round.
In another match Maria Sharapova’s US Open title defence ended in tatters on Saturday when she was stunned 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 by Polish teenager Agnieszka Radwanska in the third round.
The second-seeded Russian led 2-0 in the final set but 18-year-old Radwanska, seeded 30, won six straight games to clinch the biggest victory of her career. “I had nothing to lose, just hit every ball, and I did it,” Radwanska told the crowd.
While Sharapova struggled on serve in breezy conditions and produced 12 double faults, Radwanska stood well inside the baseline to return serve and snatched the first set by the odd break.
The second seed won eight successive games to lead 2-0 in the final set but Radwanska stormed back to hand Sharapova her earliest Grand Slam defeat since she lost in the third round at Flushing Meadows in 2004.
“I knew that she hates it if somebody moves when she is serving,” Radwanska said. “So I knew I had a chance if I did it and she made so many errors on her second serve.”
Seventh seeded Russian Nadia Petrova also crashed out, losing 4-6, 4-6 to Hungary’s Agnes Szavay. Ukrainian Julia Vakulenko defeated Maria Kirilenko of Russia 6-2, 6-4.
On the men’s side, fourth seed Nikolay Davydenko of Russia handed Spaniard Nicolas Almagro, seeded 28th, a 7-5, 6-0, 7-5 defeat.
