Following the Election Commission’s directive, RJD MP Mohammad Shahabuddin was shifted from Siwan jail to Patna’s Beur jail early today. His transfer came after several Opposition parties complained to EC’s special observer K.J. Rao, that the MP was influencing the electoral process from inside the jail. He was even linked to the abduction of an Independent candidate on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the EC has directed the state government to appoint Ratan Sanjay as the SP of Siwan district, C.K. Anil as the DM and K.K. Pathak as the DM of the neighbouring Gopalganj district, home of RJD chief Laloo Prasad Yadav and Sadhu Yadav.
Sanjay, a 1998 batch IPS officer, is widely known for cracking the whip on tainted politicians and criminals in Bihar. As SP of Kaimur district, which went to polls in the first phase, Sanjay had ensured foolproof deployment of Central paramilitary forces. Non-deployment of Central forces is a regular complaint of opposition parties in the state.
Anil is known to be a non-pliable officer, whereas Pathak had created sensation when he filed FIRs against RJD leaders for defacing the hoardings of a government institution he was heading, in December 2004.
Laloo said the EC order is an intervention in the judicial process since the RJD MP was in judicial custody. But the Jail IG of Bihar, Deepak Singh, said the state is empowered to keep a prisoner in whichever jails it considers appropriate.
