JOHANNESBURG, January 14: India trounced Scotland by seven wickets to notch up their first win in the Youth World Cup Cricket Tournament at Lenasia, a Soweto suburb, yesterday.

Bundling the Scots out for a mere 103, it took India just 26.3 overs to reach the winning target, losing three wickets along the way.

After skipper Amit Pagnis won the toss and elected to field, seamer Laxmi Rattan Shukla struck two vital blows to get rid of opener Fraser Watts and Ayaz Gul conceding only 11 runs off seven overs.

Shukla’s good work was followed up by spin trio of offies Harbhajan Singh (2-16) and Virender Sehwag (3-4) and left-arm Shivsagar Singh (3-15) to dismiss the Scots for 103 in 48 overs. Their highest scorer was Neil Millar with 21.

The early exit of opener Pagnis failed to ruffle the Indians who attained the target in 26.3 overs losing the wickets also of Reetinder Sodhi (25) and Sehwag (10). Mohammad Kaif and V Saravanan remained unbeaten with 48 and 6.

Playing in the Gavaskar group, India had lost their opening match to hosts South Africa by four wickets.

Centuries were scored in four of the eight matches played in various centres across South Africa yesterday, as the traditional cricketing nations continued to dominate the tournament.
