Police fired in the air and used batons to disperse two groups of people from different communities after clashes between them in Manoharpura area here today left seven persons including five policemen injured.

Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC were promulgated across the city and a large police force was deployed at Manoharpura under Kotawali police station to prevent further violence, District Magistrate TN Singh said. The trouble started when two women of different communities entered into a heated argument over yesterday’s incident in which a youth riding a motorcycle had hit a five-year-old child. That incident had sparked a minor clash in which one person was injured.

The quarrel between the two women triggered heavy brick-batting between members of both communities. Police fired in the air after their intervention failed to stop the clashes. Over two dozen people were taken into custody. A DSP and a magistrate were posted in Manoharpura and the officers will remain in the area till normalcy is restored, SSP Prasant Kumar and Singh said.

Five policemen, including a sub-inspector, sustained injuries in the brick-batting, Kumar said. The administration formed a peace committee of 22 people of both communities after yesterday’s clash.
