A series of explosions today ripped apart Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi’s oft-repeated claim of improvement in the law and order situation in the state. One police sub-inspector was killed, while six persons sustained serious injuries.
The sub-inspector, who has been identified as Dipak Deuri, was killed while he was trying to defuse an explosive device at North Salmara in Bongaigaon district. Three other policemen were also injured in the same blast, and an equal number sustained injuries in a grenade explosion at Sonapur police station near Guwahati.
Officials in Guwahati were clueless about who was behind the renewed spate of violence as reports of explosions continued to pour in. Rumours, too, spread, creating panic across the state.
Reports of blasts poured in from Sibsagar, Nagaon, North Salmara and Dhubri during the daytime, while four powerful blasts went off almost simultaneously in Kamrup district, and three in Guwahati.
Police said while the first explosion in Guwahati went off around 6.45 pm in front of Fancybazar police station, the other three occurred near a private hospital outside Guwahati airport and at Sonapur.
The police later said the ULFA was suspected to be behind the fresh bouts of violence. The outfit, however, was yet to claim responsibility for the explosions.
