MUMBAI, JULY 9: Pivotals led by index-based shares rallied smartly on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) today with the Sensex gaining about 36 points in the wake of good buying support from foreign funds and domestic financial institutions. Infosys gained smartly by Rs 146 to Rs 3,861 following excellent first quarter results.The BSE sensitive index (Sensex) started at 4353.83 and touched the day's high of 4387.61 before closing at 4362.87 with a net gain of 36.46 points compared to the previous level of 4326.41. The BSE-100 index advanced by 17.65 points to 1887.86 from previous close of 1870.21.Brokers said the sentiment would have been much better but for substantial losses suffered by heavy-weighted scrips like Hindustan Lever and ITC that encountered sizeable selling by operators who also had booked profits in other high-priced software shares. Hindustan Lever dropped by Rs 54 to Rs 2371 and ITC by Rs 17.50 to Rs 1040.Operators preferred to square up positions on account of end-accountconsiderations but FIIs reportedly bought stocks like BHEL, Tisco, Telco, Larsen, Grasim, Indian Rayon and Sterlite besides Philips, Novartis and Siemens. Indian institutions too lent support by picking up PSU scrips like HPCL, BPCL and some others.Of the 148 traded specified shares, 102 showed handsome gains while 43 recorded moderate falls and three held steady. Reliance, which managed to close steady amidst heavy onslaught as its quarterly results fell short of market expectations, clocked the highest turnover of Rs 172.23 crore of the total volume of business of Rs 2069.21 crore. Reliance closed at Rs 180.50 from previous close of Rs 180.60. SBI gained Rs 8.30 at Rs 271.75.
