MUMBAI, JULY 29: Shiv Sena has organised State-wide meetings as well as processions tomorrow to condemn the decision of the Election Commission to disenfranchise and debar party supremo Bal Thackeray from contesting elections.

“Sena workers at the grassroots level are disturbed by the decision of the Commission. While there is no objection if he is barred from contesting, since he has already declared that he will never contest the election, but debarring him from exercising his franchise was unacceptable to the party workers,”Sena leader Subhash Desai said.

Desai said that a high-level delegation led by Chief Minister Narayan Rane will meet Chief Electoral Officer D K Sankaran tomorrow to convey the sentiments of the Sena workers.

Replying to a question, Desai said his party has not given a call for a Mumbai or Maharashtra Bandh to protest against the decision. “Thackeray has specifically stated that no such call should be given,” Desai said.

Commenting on today’s bandh in parts of the metropolis, Desai said it was the spontaneous reaction of the Sena workers.
