NASHIK, Aug 1: The Shiv Sena and the Bharatiya Janata Party are at loggerheads over a liquor bar owned by a Sena corporator at CIDCO colony here. A BJP corporator, Dr Aruna More, has demanded that the `Shivam’ country liquor bar owned by Sena corporator, Baliram Thakre, be closed down.

She has threatened to launch an agitation against the bar on grounds that it has become a public nuisance, especially, for ladies. On the other hand, district unit president of the Sena, Vinayak Pande, has rushed to the rescue of Thakre, stating that if action has to be taken against Shivam, all the six other bars in the CIDCO area be closed down simultaneously. Pande has also criticised the BJP for using Dr More as a shield to launch a tirade against a Sena corporator.

Incidentally, Thakre is a close chum of the Guardian Minister of Nashik, Babanrao Gholap. Thakre had opened a liquor bar about two years ago and Gholap, despite holding the prohibition portfolio, had inaugurated the bar.

ONE KILLED: One person was killedand three others were injured in a riot between the supporters of a Shiv Sena corporator, Surekha Bhosale, and her critics, in the Ravivar Peth area last night.

A folksinger and an employee of the NMC, Dattatraya Shripad Wagh, residing in the Dangar Utar area, had invited the wrath of the lady corporator over the quality of civic amenities in the area. Wagh and his son, Kiran had quarrelled with her over the condition of roads and other civic works in the area, about four months ago. Around 11.30 p.m, seven supporters of the corporator barged into the house of Wagh and assaulted him and his son Kiran for daring to question the corporator.

After violence, Ladakh talks back on track, resume Oct 22

Ladakh civil society groups will resume talks with the Centre on October 22, following a judicial probe into the September 24 violence in Leh ordered by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. The probe will be conducted by a former Supreme Court judge, while the meeting will address Ladakh's demands for statehood and Sixth Schedule status.
