Mohammad Kaif and Yuvraj Singh, heroes of India’s sensational victory over England in the final of Natwest Trophy at Lord’s on Saturday, who were originally selected only for the tri-series, are likely to be retained for the four-match Test series as well between the two countries, starting on July 25.
BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya has summoned the national selectors for an ‘emergency meeting’ in Kolkata on Tuesday (July 16) when they are likely to review the selection of the team for the Test series. Dalmiya will meet the selectors before they ‘‘assess the latest situation arising out of India’s victory at Lord’s.’’
Yuvraj, Mohd Kaif and Dinesh Mongia were picked only for the tri-series while four players – Shiv Sundar Das, Sanjay Bangar, Wasim Jaffer and wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel – are scheduled to join the team in England to complete the 16-member squad for the Test series.
But with India’s victory in the tri-series, the situation has dramatically changed. Now, there is every likelihood of all the three players (Kaif, Yuvraj and Mongia) being asked to stay back for the Test series as well.
The presence of such youngsters as Kaif, Yuvraj, Mongia and Sehwag in the Indian team had undoubtedly made a vast difference to the fortunes of the team, both in batting and fielding, as was evident in the tri-series. With the World Cup in South Africa just a year away, it is being felt that the team’s composition and combination should not be disturbed.
