BELLARY, SEPT 1: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sushma Swaraj, who is taking on Congress president Sonia Gandhi in the Bellary Lok Sabha constituency, was forced to cancel one of her meetings on Tuesday night with security personnel accompanying her apprehending trouble from local Congressmen.
Sushma was scheduled to hold a road-side meeting at Yashwant Nagar in Sandur Taluk, about 60 km from here. However, the security personnel’s suspicion was aroused when a group of Congressmen started raising slogans in favour of Sonia as soon as the BJP leader’s convoy reached the meeting spot.
Sandur is seen as a Congress bastion having returned former State finance minister M Y Ghorapade six times to the assembly.
As Sushma was asked to speed past the spot, at least 75 BJP followers blocked the road and pleaded with her to address them at least for two minutes. “We have been waiting for hours for you. Kindly address the gathering for just two minutes,” they said.
The security personnel, however, did not allow Sushma to come out of her vehicle, though she was willing to address the crowd. Tension filled the air as the determined BJP men swore to take on the Congressmen.
A posse of policemen at the venue tried to chase the troublemakers but the matter was settled with Sushma assuring to return on September 3.
In her meetings, Sushma said, “Priyanka wants you all to save her mother. I plead with you to save mother India”.
