MUMBAI, MARCH 11: Akhil Bharatiya Sri Ramanand Virakta Vairagi Samaj (ABSRVVS) chief Mahant Kaushal Kishore Das has accused the Hinduja brothers, Shrichand and Ashok, of "illegally grabbing" the plot adjoining the Sri Ram Temple between 11th and 12th road, Khar.

Das is in the city to address over 1,000 members of the ABSRVVS, a sect of sadhus who call themselves Ramanandis. The Ramanandis are currently celebrating Ramanand Shatabdi, a 10-day festival, at Tapovan in Malad east.

Levelling the charge against the Hindujas at a religious meeting held at Tapovan on Saturday, Das said: "I toured temples in Mumbai during the Ramanand Shatabdi and I realised that there is no Mahant at the Sri Ram temple. I learnt from certain Ramanandis that the Hindujas had grabbed the plot adjoining the temple at Khar allegedly with the help of false signatures of Mahant Baldev Das who was incidentally suffering from paralysis and was not in a position to sign."

Das also said the Hindujas wanted to take over the temple as well as the plot adjoining the temple is 22,000 sq ft and the temple, built in 1956, has 7,500 sq ft.

Members of the sect have now threatened to go on a fast unto death if the Hindujas do not return the plot of land to the 100-odd sadhus who reside at the temple. "We will begin an agitation and it will be bigger than the one that happened for the Ram Janmabhoomi at Ayodhya, I promise," fumed Das.

When The Indian Express contacted the Hudujas, Ashok Huduja said: "I do not accept any of these charges. In any case the plot adjoining the temple was given to the Hinduja Foundation by the Mahant Baldev Das so there is no question of grabbing it."
