At 26, Sanjeev Abhyankar is probably the youngest performing vocalist of distinction in the country today. He attributes his success to many factors, stressing that it was the little things in his life that added up to a whole.
“I was lucky to be born into a musical family as my mother and grandmother were involved in music. If you don’t get the right atmosphere, your art cannot flourish,” feels Abhyankar.
He also believes that starting young proved to be a tremendous advantage. He started learning classical music from his mother at eight and at 14, he began training under Pandit Jasraj.
“At a tender age, one’s grasping power is immense. And, of course, one of the reasons for success is getting the right guru, as I got. How many people find the guru they are searching for?”
And last, but not the least, he says, “I possess certain qualities which have taken me to my goal – consistency, steadiness of mind, a focussed attitude, concentration, dedication and sincerity.” Whatever the audience profile, he tries to fulfil their expectations. “Yes, audience appreciation has had a lot to do with my success”.
“Destiny has played a great role in my life,” he relates, and quips, “the ability to travel extensively has taken me places”.
