Just 48 hours after a 12-year-old was raped in full public view in a suburban local train in Mumbai, a resident of Mumbra was gang-raped while her husband was held hostage. Four of the 10 suspects have been arrested even as the 19-year-old victim lies battered in hospital.
Apart from the sheer brutality of the incident, the ease with which the suspects gained access to the house where the victim and her husband live, is stunning: They simply knocked on the door and walked in. In another gut-wrenching revelation, the suspects have confessed that they had planned to rape a woman, any woman from the locality, after visiting a beer bar late on August 15. Their binge, apparently, continued till about 1 am, when they walked into Sanjaywadi near Kausa, Mumbra.

NEW DELHI: The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) has expressed shock and horror on Sunday over the rape of the disabled minor girl on the Mumbai Suburban train and said that it would organise a protest action in Mumbai. (PTI) |
Ten men turned up at the couple’s house in the wee hours on August 16, police said. The victim, her husband and one-year-old son were asleep at the time and were startled at the knock on the door. When the victim’s husband answered the knock, four of them barged in while the rest stood guard outside the shanty settlement, police said. Then, at knife-point, the husband was herded outside the hut and all 10 of them took turns to rape his wife.
Even as they brutalised the victim, her son lay on a cot in the same room, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Kiran Shelar said. He says the victim’s husband works in a grocery shop in Kausa for a paltry Rs 2,500 per month. The family had migrated from Kolkata to Dombivli before finding cheap accommodation at Sanjaywadi.
‘‘I have told police officers to carry out a thorough investigation and arrest all the accused,’’ Police Commissioner (Thane), S. M. Shangari said. Those held have been identified as Babloo alias Tajjuddin (25), Amir Beg Shaikh (22), Chindwada Shingade and Raju Ozaa. Cops say they are still looking for Sachin, Nawaz, Dinesh, Bhola and two others.
