NEW DELHI, Nov 19: Search is on for the two children still missing after yesterday’s tragedy in which 28 children died when their schoolbus fell off the Wazirabad bridge into the Yamuna. Navy divers, police and local fisherman all joined in the search to locate the bodies as anxious relatives of the two missing children-Priti Srivastava (15) and Amit Dahiya (13) looked on.
Dharmender, an uncle of the missing boy, a class 9 student, has been waiting at the site since last night. “His sister Dolly was with him in the bus. She managed to escape to safety. He was, however, trapped inside. We just want our child back. We haven’t even managed to find the school bag.” Said another relative, “We keep wishing that he never was on the bus.”
Tarun Srivastava, Priti’s brother had been at the site since last morning. “This is the third death in our family in seven months. First our uncle died. Then six months ago our mother died. My father is in a very bad state right now.”
“At least if we find the dead body he could be at some kind of peace. But this wait is becoming unbearable.”
Navy divers were at work all afternoon in an effort to locate the bodies, but were unsuccessful. Local fishermen also pitched in the rescue effort by lowering their nets.
“It is very difficult to predict where the body could be because the flow of the current is unpredictable. Although the surface of the water looks calm, strong crosscurrents under the water can take the body almost anywhere. We are checking the water downstream as well,” said a Navy diver.
