NEW DELHI, August 2: Union minister of state for Welfare and animal rights activist, Maneka Gandhi said that she would appeal to the Lieutenant Governor, Vijai Kapoor to allot two adjoining shops to Friendicoes under the Defence Colony flyover.
The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) had pulled down the animal shelter run by the NGO some days back resulting in a traumatising experience for the animals that had found a home at Friendicoes. Many were forced out on the streets.
While volunteers at Frendicoes have been working hard at their task the shortage of space has created innumerable problems, forcing them, in some cases, to chain strays used to roaming free. A number of animal lovers called up Express Newsline today, expressing their concern over the issue.
According to Geeta Seshamani of Friendicoes, the two shops were allotted to them by the then LG, H.L. Kapoor, but they were taken back and they have been lying unused since then.
“We have decided to request the Union Urban Affairs Minister, Ram Jethmalani to intervene in the matter and help us out” says Seshamani.
According to Seshamani, animal lovers continued to pour in with their contributions to the Friendicoes today.
Express Newsline has received telephone calls from animal-lovers among its readers who are outraged. Many of them said they would like to help, either by adopting the stray animals or by contributing to a fund for relocating the shelter. Cheques may be made out to Friendicos SECA, Shop Nos 271/273, Defence Colony Flyover Market (on Jungpura side), New Delhi 1100024.
