CHANDIGARH, Feb 15: The local Sanatam Dharam College, Sector 32, cricket team has been debarred for one year from the next academic session for reportedly fielding an `outsider’ in the Panjab University Inter-College cricket tournament. The decision was taken today by the executive committee of the Panjab University Sports Committee on the recommendations of the `Protest Committee’, constituted to find the fact.
Meanwhile, Rahul Panta, a student of BA part one of SD-32, has also been debarred from PU’s meet for one year. Rahul was a member of SD College-32 cricket team, which finished runners-up in the PU Inter-College cricket tournament, and had beaten PU Campus in the semi-finals. The protest was lodged by PU Campus.
However, SD-32 lost to DAV College-10, in the final.
In another significant decision, local Government College for Girls-11, swimming team, which got second position in the PU Inter-College swimming meet, has been disqualified for fielding a swimmer, who was employed while she participated in the meet. As per the rules of the university, no student can take part in the competition, who is employed.
Local MCM DAV College-36 have been promoted runners-up from third position. Government College for Women, Ludhiana remain winners.
However, the executive committee has decided to issue a warning to some players of the PU Inter-College weightlifting team, including the coach, for indiscipline.
It may be recalled that the coach and some of the members of the PU weightlifting team, including women, were involved in a controversy during the All India Inter-University weightlifting meet held at Raipur (Madhya Pradesh).
“Since both the players and the coach had levelled charges and counter-charges, the committee decided to caution them,” disclosed one of the executive committee member.
It was also decided that the PU annual sports prize distribution function would be held in the second week of March.
While PUSC annual general body meeting will be held in the second week of April.
