US secretary of transportation Norman Y. Minota on Thursday said the Indo-US aviation treaty will give an opportunity to the private sector to pitch in.
In fact, the Indo-US Aviation Cooperation Programme is modelled on a similar Aviation Cooperation Programme that exists between the US and China. The six US corporations partnering in the India programme are Boeing, Bell Helicopter, GE, Honeywell, Raytheon and Pratt & Whitney.
Addressing a lucheon meeting organised by Ficci and Amcham, Minota said the agreement will result in more services, options, more innovations and lower prices. ‘‘New services are already flooding into the market. This agreement will stimulate new passenger and cargo services, new partnerships, innovation and lower prices,’’ Minota said.
After this agreement, ‘‘Whoever wants to fly to the US can just file their flight plans (with the ministry) and go,’’ Minister of State for Civil Aviation Praful Patel said.
Describing the new agreement as the ‘‘most liberal we have signed with any country so far’’, Patel said it entailed lifting of any capacity restriction and provides flexibility in terms of the ‘fifth freedom’ air traffic right as well as code shares between airlines of the two countries.
