School owner fined Rs 3 lakh for storing liquor

The owner of a private school here has been arrested for illegally storing 780 foreign liquor bottles.

The owner of a private school here has been arrested for illegally storing 780 foreign liquor bottles worth Rs 15 lakh at the school premises in village Binola.

Starex International School owner Sunil Bharadwaj was granted bail immediately after he paid a fine of Rs 3.25 lakh. Deputy Commissioner at the excise and taxation department Ashok Sharma said a total of 780 bottles of Scotch whisky were recovered from the school on Wednesday. All confiscated bottles will be destroyed as per the policy of the department.

Starex Import Export India Private Limited, a sister concern of the school, earlier had a licence to import foreign liquor, sources said.

The company had a godown at Green Park in Delhi and but the licence expired in 2006. The stocks were transferred to Gurgaon and not surrendered in Delhi as per guidelines.

School authorities said they had nothing to do with the business interest of owners.
