MUMBAI, April 29: With 15 seconds left on the clock, Chinmay Bhandarkar, School of Basketball ball-handler and captain, sunk in his first free throw to take his team one point ahead. He missed the second, but was fortuitous to collect the rebound and convert it, as School of Basketball defeated Ghatkopar YMCA A 45-42 in a gripping knock-out match of the 9th DB Prabhu Memorial youth basketball tournament, sponsored by Colgate, at Indian Gymkhana today.
The thriller was fought keenly, as the lead swung hands with alacrity. Sandeep Nair led the attack for the Ghatkopar side and they were placed comfortably 21-14 at half time. But the level-headed School of Basketball boys kept the pressure on, and forced errors from their opponents.
In the girls round-robin league, hosts Indian Gymkhana scored a 50-11 win over novices Agradneya B. Defending champions Agradneya A also scored their second successive win, over Satara EMS, and the stage seems set for a repeat of last year’s girls final between today’swinners.
