School administrator arrested for possession of banned firecrackers

With the State Pollution Control Board insisting on increasing awareness in the city schools in doing away with banned crackers, the Kolkata Police arrested an administrator of a reputed school on Tuesday night for allegedly possessing banned crackers.

The Pollution Control Board and Kolkata Police have come up with stricter norms this festive season while imposing ban on crackers which produce a sound level of more than 90 decibels.

Krishna Damani, the administrator and spokesperson of the school, was arrested from his house in Beliaghata along with his brother Vasant Damani.

“We have also arrested several others along with him. From his house alone we have recovered around 100 kgs of illegal firecrackers,” said an official of the Beliaghata police station.

Police said they received a tip off that illegal crackers were being burst at his home late on Tuesday night.

Police said several others have been detained in connection with possession of illegal crackers.He was produced at a court in Sealdah on Wednesday and was released on bail.

“Children were bursting fire crackers. When the police approached them, I tried to intervene. They left the children and arrested me,” he said.
