The market access initiative (MAI) of the commerce ministry, which has proved to be ineffective and has had a very low off-take so far, will be overhauled and re-designed. The ministry has sought the Planning Commission’s help for the purpose.

At the quarterly performance review (QPR) of the commerce ministry, Commerce Secretary S.N. Menon pointed out that although the scheme had proved to be ineffective and inefficient in its present form, it was an important and innovative scheme and should not be discontinued.

He pointed out that the design of the scheme seemed to be inadequate which needed to be corrected in consultation with the Planning Commission. The commerce ministry asked the Plan panel to give inputs for proper fund utilisation and effectiveness of the scheme.
